A government report: an increase in the import bill of wheat and basic commodities during 2020 and 2021
English - Wednesday 27 July 2022 الساعة 03:48 pmA government report issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade showed that the import bill of wheat and basic commodities increased significantly during 2020 and 2021 by more than one hundred percent compared to the previous year 2019.
The report, which was discussed today, Tuesday, at the Presidential Leadership Council meeting, indicated that the wheat import bill increased from $700 million in 2019 to $0.858 million in 2020 and 2021, respectively, while the bill for importing basic food commodities increased to three billion and 23 million dollars.
This comes at a time when the World Bank expected that the Yemeni economy will register modest growth in 2022 due to the decline in the basic effects, the armistice, the expected increase in remittances, and the financial support provided by Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The government report, according to the government agency Saba, touched on the global crisis and its repercussions on Yemeni food security, including severe bottlenecks in supply chains, and the resulting increases in the prices of food and energy commodities, fertilizers and agricultural inputs.
The Presidential Council praised the government's measures to confront the repercussions of the global food crisis, and directed more measures to secure alternative sources and markets for importing grains, improving control measures on food prices, strengthening the social protection network, and humanitarian relief in cooperation and coordination with regional and international agencies and organizations.
