Aden, NewsYemen:

The United Nations announced, on Saturday, that "a proposal has been put on the table for discussion" between the Yemeni government and the Houthi militia, to gradually reopen roads in Taiz and other governorates, despite the presence of a declared agreement clearly obligating the Houthis to open roads with the entry into force of the humanitarian truce that is about to expire.

This came in a statement issued by the office of the United Nations envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg.

The statement said that Grundberg "concluded an initial round of discussions between the two parties (the government and the Houthis) in the Jordanian capital, Amman, to open main roads in Taiz and other (unspecified) provinces, according to the armistice agreement that was brokered by the United Nations."

He added that "a proposal was drawn up (he did not mention the proposed party) to gradually reopen the roads that included an implementation mechanism and guarantees for the safety of civilian travelers, based on the discussions that lasted for 3 days and the options presented by the two parties."

The statement quoted Grundberg as saying, "It is promising for the two parties to take the initiative to meet face to face to discuss the issue of opening roads for the first time in years."

The UN official called "the two parties now to conclude their internal deliberations urgently and achieve positive results that the Yemeni people can see."

And he added, "The importance of lifting restrictions on the freedom of movement of people and goods is not limited to the positive impact of alleviating the suffering of Yemenis and reviving their economy, but will also help in strengthening confidence in the political process."
