Aden, NewsYemen:

The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded in the Jordanian capital, Amman, the day before yesterday, his two-day meeting with Yemeni economic experts from diverse backgrounds to consult on the priorities of the multi-track peace process.

Participants emphasized the momentum provided by the armistice on economic issues and identified opportunities to stimulate further progress.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Yemen, discussions focused on identifying the main issues that will be addressed in a future dialogue between the parties and in the economic track of a multi-track process led by the United Nations.

He added, the issues discussed included the coordination of fiscal and monetary policies, the stability of the currency exchange rate across Yemen, public revenues, and the financing of public service salaries.

The two sides also consulted on issues of rising commodity costs due to freedom of movement restrictions, double taxation, and reconstruction, in addition to other strategic priority questions.

The statement from the Office of the UN Envoy confirmed that the discussions stressed the need for coordination in vital sectors that could have a direct impact on civilians and their livelihoods.

The participants also shed light on the challenges facing the private sector and ways to address those challenges to help revive the Yemeni economy in a manner that serves the public interest and the future of Yemen.

They stressed the urgent need to support the Yemeni commercial banking sector and its ability to engage internationally and support trade.

“Addressing Yemen’s deteriorating economy will be pivotal to alleviating the chronic suffering of Yemeni civilians and achieving a sustainable solution to some of the main drivers of this conflict,” the statement quoted Mr. Grundberg as saying.

"It is important to identify those areas in which our efforts can be useful and effective in helping the parties find common ground in addressing issues that affect all Yemenis across the country," he added.

Many international stakeholders, including UN humanitarian agencies and international financial institutions, participated in the meeting, providing their views and experiences to inform guided discussions.
