Aden, NewsYemen:

On Thursday, the UN Security Council will hold a session to discuss the issue of the floating oil tanker "Safer" off the coast of Hodeidah, western Yemen.

The session, which is being held at the request of Britain, comes after the efforts of the United Nations to inspect the ship failed and reached a dead end, due to the intransigence of the Houthi militia.

A British spokesman warned at the United Nations of the grave risks of any potential oil spill, which could have catastrophic repercussions on Yemen and the region.

The spokesman said, "The responsibility of the oil tanker lies with the Houthis, who have to cooperate with the United Nations. We will raise this issue to the Security Council on Thursday to discuss the next steps."

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, reiterated that the implementation of maintenance work is not possible without an impartial assessment.

He said that the Houthis' statements "appear to confirm that they are not ready to give the guarantees that we need for the boarding of the United Nations mission on board the Safer."

Dujarric added, "Sefer is a dangerous site, and we have to understand precisely what we are dealing with before we do any major business."
