Griffiths and Lenderking call for an immediate ceasefire in Yemen
English - Thursday 03 June 2021 الساعة 07:53 amThe United States and United Nations envoys to Yemen, Timothy Lenderking, and Martin Griffiths called on Tuesday for an immediate ceasefire in Yemen.
This came during a meeting between them in the Jordanian capital, Amman, according to a tweet by the US State Department published by the account on Near Eastern Affairs.
"Lenderking discussed with Griffiths the latter's trip to Sanaa," the office said.
The two sides expressed their firm commitment to "the necessity of an immediate and comprehensive nationwide ceasefire, to provide the much-needed humanitarian relief to the Yemeni people."
On Monday, the UN envoy to Yemen left Sanaa, after a two-day visit during which he met the leader of the Houthis, Abdul-Malik Al-Houthi.
Before his departure, UN envoy Martin Griffiths said that Yemen cannot be governed sustainably based on military hegemony, criticizing the insistence on exacerbating the suffering of Yemenis and depriving them of a future without war.
Griffiths, who spoke at a press conference in Sana'a after a two-day visit to present solutions to the Yemeni crisis, was implicitly referring to a militia that is betting on military power to impose hegemony on Yemen.
