US President Joe Biden stressed on Friday that the "only possible solution" to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the establishment of a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel, stressing at the same time his commitment to Israel's security and the need for the region to "unambiguously" recognize the Hebrew state.
Biden said during a joint press conference with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in at the White House, "There is no change in my commitment to the security of Israel. Point on the line ... No change at all," stressing in return that "the change is that we still need a solution." The two states ... This is the only solution, the only solution. "
The Democratic President’s statement came the day after Israel and the armed factions in the Gaza Strip, mediated by Cairo, reached an agreement on a ceasefire that ended 11 days of mutual bombardment between the two sides.
Biden also announced in his press conference that he would work in cooperation with the international community to provide "substantial" financial aid for "the reconstruction of Gaza," but "without giving Hamas an opportunity to rebuild its arsenal."
And while the US President called for an end to the clashes between Arabs and Jews in Jerusalem, he stressed that "there will be no peace" if the region does not "unambiguously" recognize the Hebrew state.
"I told the Israelis that it is very important for me to put an end to these clashes between groups in Jerusalem, which are the actions of extremists on both sides," he said.
Jerusalem and mixed Israeli cities witnessed over several days clashes between Arab residents and other Jews ignited, especially the possibility of a judicial decision to evacuate homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem from its Palestinian residents for the benefit of Jewish settlers.
The "two-state solution" has always been the pillar of US policy in the Middle East, but this matter changed during the era of former President Donald Trump, who in December 2017 recognized Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state, and in March 2019, Israel annexed the occupied Syrian Golan.
Trump announced a controversial plan to bring peace to the Middle East that would allow Israel to annex settlements in the occupied West Bank and recognize a future Palestinian state that was demilitarized and limited in sovereignty.
The Palestinians categorically rejected this plan, while the Jewish state fully supported it.
