Popular discontent.. The price of a gas cylinder is 50 Saudi riyals in Sana'a and 14 Saudi riyals in Aden
English - Sunday 30 July 2023 الساعة 03:25 pmResidents of Sana'a and the northern governorates under the control of the Houthi militia, Iran's arm in Yemen, complain about the high price of domestic gas, which has become a burden on them, since the militia replaced domestic gas with imported gas through the port of Hodeidah.
Last May, the Houthi militia prevented cheap gas imports from Marib at a price of 4,500 riyals per cylinder in the official market, in favor of importing more expensive gas to Yemen through the port of Hodeidah, at a price of 7,000 riyals per cylinder.
And at a time when the Houthi militia published media reports that since it was imported from abroad as an alternative to Marib gas, the manifestations of the gas crisis have ended, the crises have ended, and supply stability has prevailed. Citizens are mocking the Houthi militia's misleading, lying, and greed.
Citizens commented on what was published by the Houthi militia by saying: The price of a domestic gas cylinder is 7,000 riyals, and most families have returned to firewood because of the high price, stressing that when the price of a cylinder is 1,200 riyals, here we say we were able to end the crisis.
Reports indicate that forestry activities in the country are decreasing, with more than 800,000 trees cut down annually, as Yemenis need firewood due to the high price of domestic gas.
The price of an 18-liter household gas cylinder in the areas controlled by the Houthi militia is 7,000 riyals, which is equivalent to 50 Saudi riyals, while its price in the capital, Aden, is 5,500 riyals, which is equal to 14 Saudi riyals.
Citizens in Sana'a say that the price of a cooking cylinder is 7 thousand riyals, which is very expensive, and in the countryside it reaches 8 thousand with delivery, which means around 18 dollars, stressing that domestic gas is one of the necessities that burden the citizen in light of the current difficult economic conditions.
Citizens in areas controlled by the Houthi militia believe that if the militia is able to provide gas at a price of three thousand riyals, it is considered an economic achievement, but the price is increasing.
They added that the global price of domestic gas is almost free, and its sale in Sana'a at a price of 50 Saudi riyals, confirms that the Houthi militia's authority is a failure, and the difference in the gas price could not provide even salaries, even for education only, and failure so far is prevalent.
They said that the price of gas at this level in Sana'a is still exhausting the citizen, pointing out that they need the price of the cylinder to return to its price before the war and the crisis and before 2011 so that all segments of the people can obtain it, but today it is limited to those who can afford it. As for the prevailing citizen not reach it.
The price of domestic gas increased from 1925 riyals per cylinder of 18 liters at the end of 2014 to 7000 riyals at the end of mid-2023, an increase of 250% compared to the end of 2014.
The Houthi militia has exaggeratedly raised the prices of the requirements necessary for the continuation of life, and the citizen finds himself compelled to buy these goods and services according to the official and unofficial prices of the Houthi militia on the black market.
The Houthi militia acquires the domestic gas trade in its areas of control, to achieve huge financial gains to finance its war against the Yemenis and enrich its leaders. The daily profits of the Houthi militia from the proceeds of selling domestic gas are estimated at about 96 million riyals per day.
