Study: Organizations' programs do not target the economically displaced Yemenis

A new analytical study criticized the role of international NGOs operating in Yemen, for ignoring the economic, political and security dimensions that must be taken into account in programs targeting displacement.
The "Economic Drivers of Displacement in Yemen" study said that the money reaching Yemen favors immediate emergency assistance rather than providing long-term solutions, a source of concern because there are no programs targeting the economically displaced.
The study, issued by the Federation of Cash Aid in Yemen, added that displacement in Yemen is one of the most disastrous effects of the protracted conflict, which has destroyed the economic systems that support livelihoods, prompting people to migrate to areas with higher levels of economic activity.
Yemen is witnessing a humanitarian emergency and displacement, with about 23.4 million Yemenis dependent on humanitarian aid and about 4.3 million people displaced from their homes to other parts of the country.
The study indicated that there is a blackout on the impact of the conflict on livelihoods, work, markets, and other key economic areas, as families are forced to flee, due to economic opportunities that no longer allow families to afford basic, sometimes life-saving needs.
She said humanitarian programs must address broader economic insecurity by shifting from exclusive immediate humanitarian relief to dependence on aid and its potential for further displacement.
She advocated that protractedly displaced people, host communities and their broader socio-economic ecosystems should be targeted to allow the displaced to better integrate into local economies.
