Report: Houthi militia smuggles Iranian weapons from Yemen to Somalia
English - Thursday 11 November 2021 الساعة 03:38 pmThe Global Initiative to Combat Transnational Organized Crime says weapons provided by Iran to its Houthi allies in Yemen are being smuggled through the Gulf of Aden to Somalia, where Al-Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab fighters are fighting a weak and divided government.
The initiative, a Geneva-based research organization, said its report was based on data from more than 400 weapons documented at 13 locations across Somalia over an eight-month period and stockpiles of 13 boats intercepted by military ships.
This is the first study of its kind to announce the extent of arms smuggling from Yemen to the country in the Horn of Africa.
The study, which is scheduled to be published today, says, "Weapons that come from the arms trade between Iran and Yemen are smuggled into Somalia." Iran has consistently denied any involvement in arms smuggling to the Houthis. However, there is ample evidence pointing to supplies from the Iranian state."
Neither the Iranian Foreign Ministry nor a spokesman for the Yemeni Houthi forces responded to a request for comment on the study. Iran has repeatedly denied any involvement in arms smuggling to its Houthi allies in Yemen, where tens of thousands have died in the civil war raging there for six years.
