Severe malnutrition is killing Hais children

At a time when the city of Hays in Hodeidah is experiencing difficult conditions due to the Houthi war and the deterioration of the health and economic situation in it, the inpatient department in the rural hospital in the city received, during the month of July of the year 2021 AD, a number (8 children, including 2 males and 6 females, young children with severe acute malnutrition  It has serious complications.

Children as young as three years old, sleeping inside the inpatient department of the hospital, most of them come from the villages and areas of Hays that are under the control of the Houthi militias. They were infected with the virus of poverty and hunger, and they were malnourished.

Nabout Yahya Muhammad, supervisor of the hospital’s pediatric inpatient department, told NewsYemen that the department is working to receive and treat these cases, which arrive in their worst cases, and have serious complications such as malaria, diarrhea and severe infections within 24 hours.

She added, that these complications are treated until the child's condition stabilizes, and he is returned to the department, to take the nutritional intake of the milk (the ready-made meal) and the appropriate, and their conditions have improved and they have been cured, and they have been discharged from the hospital well, and indicated that the prevention of malnutrition and treatment of its devastating effects begins with care.  Good health for mothers.

In a related context, the director of the health office in the directorate, Dr. (Mohammed Talib Hamna), explained that malnutrition is primarily due to the health and economic situation, and to the existence of misconceptions of mothers in neglecting breastfeeding and replacing it with formula milk that is not useful for the child, whether by preparing or using dirty plastic bottles.  , which causes it to be poorly absorbed and not utilized, and this leads to malnutrition and its complications.

The director of Hais Health, Dr. Hamna, warned of severe acute malnutrition, which increased unexpectedly, saying, if the situation continues in this way, and the country suffers from a deteriorating health and economic situation and the high prices of food commodities, it will likely increase by three times compared to the end of June, which we received  In it (15) cases, most of them are from one district.

He stressed, that there are very many cases in the district of children infected with this dangerous disease, the majority of whose victims are children who are struggling to survive, and live in difficult humanitarian conditions as a result of the war that the country has been experiencing for seven years.

He added, that the department has well-qualified cadres of nurses and assistants and is making efforts to receive these cases, noting that it was recently opened in March of this year (2021 AD), and is being held with the support of the World Health Organization.

Mothers come to this department to treat their children, and it represents a last resort for them to save the lives of their children suffering from this disease and complications. Malnutrition has become a real danger for children who face the dangers of war, disease and poverty, and live in difficult humanitarian conditions resulting from the militia war.

The statistics of the number of malnourished people in Hais, since the opening of the department on March 10 until the end of July, recorded 44 cases of acute and severe malnutrition with serious complications.
