Griffiths appointed as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations

Aden, NewsYemen, Exclusive:

 United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday appointed Martin Griffiths as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

Guterres said in a press statement that Griffiths will remain as a special envoy to Yemen until the announcement of the appointment of his replacement.

A UN source told NewsYemen that the most prominent candidates for the post of the UN envoy to Yemen are: Britain’s ambassador to Yemen, the European Union’s ambassador to Yemen, and the Swedish envoy to Yemen.

Naming a new envoy needs approval from the 15-member UN Security Council.
