The United States and France said, on Tuesday, that the Houthi group - Iran's arm in Yemen - had taken a "hostage" of Yemen's future.

And a brief statement by the US State Department said that the US envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking, and Christopher Farno, director of the Middle East Department at the French Foreign Ministry, agreed on this.

In the statement, the American and French officials warned that "the Houthi group is continuing a long and costly attack on Marib."

The statement concluded, "The fair deal on the table will finally bring relief to the Yemeni people," stressing that "the Houthis must participate."

Since taking office in January, US President Joe Biden has made the Yemen crisis a priority of his foreign policy, and appointed Lenderking to help revive the stalled United Nations efforts seeking to end the conflict.
