Aden, NewsYemen:

Save the Children International warned on Tuesday that civilian casualties in the Yemen war have risen to their highest level in more than a year.

In a statement issued before the G20 leaders' summit, which focuses on "protecting lives" and is being hosted by Saudi Arabia this week, the non-governmental organization said that 29 children were killed or injured in the cities of Hodeidah and Taiz, amid renewed fighting last October.

It indicated that 228 civilians were killed nationwide during the same month, the highest toll since last September.

The statement confirmed that the United Nations recently warned that the escalating conflict and the decline in humanitarian aid has brought the country to the brink of famine. As the head of the World Food Program, David Beasley, told the Security Council, "We are now in the countdown to a disaster in Yemen."

He added, "If we decide to ignore the matter, there is no doubt that Yemen will plunge into devastating famine within a few months." With global interest in the G20 summit, aid groups are calling on the participating countries to renew efforts towards a peace agreement.

The statement quoted the country director of Save the Children in Yemen, Javier Joubert, as saying, "The time is now more than ever to agree on a ceasefire and its implementation at the national level as a step towards sustainable peace."

"As G20 leaders look to solutions to protect lives around the world, they must invite the parties to the conflict in Yemen to return to the negotiating table," he added.
