The United Nations Population Fund said that it intends to expand reproductive health services and save the lives of women and girls in Yemen within the next six months after receiving a generous contribution from the United Arab Emirates to support its health activities in that country.
In a statement issued by UNFPA Representative in Yemen, Nestor Uumohangy said, UNFPA welcomes the generous contribution of US $ 25 million from the United Arab Emirates to expand the assistance it provides to the most vulnerable women and girls in need of rescue and reproductive health protection services in Yemen.
He added, "The funding comes at a critical time, as the conflict in Yemen left the health sector, especially the reproductive health and protection systems on the verge of collapse, with far-reaching consequences for women and girls." The collapse of protection systems makes women and girls more vulnerable to violence and abuse.
In this statement, the United Nations Population Fund indicated that, under this Emirati support, it will strive to improve access to reproductive health and protection services in the most vulnerable communities, helping to reach more than 2.5 million people within six months.
The Fund pointed out that this support will help pregnant women or women who suffer from complicated pregnancies to give birth safely in the most difficult to reach areas in Yemen, indicating that protection services will be expanded through the establishment of more safe places and specialized psychological care centers.
He added that, in addition to the difficulties associated with the conflict implications of women and girls, their unique needs are often overlooked in times of crisis.
The United Nations Fund once again expressed its strong gratitude and gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for its assistance in ensuring that the reproductive health care and protection services reach the hundreds of thousands of Yemeni women who now need them urgently.
The statement stated that the United Nations Population Fund is the only provider of life-saving reproductive health drugs in Yemen, and is leading coordination and provision of protection services throughout the country.
The Fund concluded its statement by saying: "To continue to reach the most vulnerable women and girls in different regions of Yemen, the Fund calls on donor countries and organizations to support it with US $ 100.5 million in 2020."
