The World Food Program said that at the end of January 2020, the food price differential changed its direction, and prices in the southern governorates became 4.6 percent more expensive than the north, after over the past years they had remained much lower than the prices in the north controlled by the Houthi militia.

The World Food Program, in a report on "exchange rate fluctuations and the implications for the cost of the minimum food basket price", added that exchange rate fluctuations and the devaluation of the Yemeni riyal have not yet resulted to significant differences in the prices of food basket commodities for the Food Security and Agriculture block.

It pointed out that the depreciation of the Yemeni riyal has not yet been matched by an increase in commodity prices because of the fact that there is sufficient food stocks in the country for two to three months.
The food program explained that the large differences in commodity prices in the northern and southern governorates will emerge if the exchange rate differences persist for some time, and it is likely that the main increases in prices in basic commodities will apply with new shipments of goods, as the current exchange rate will be a major determinant.
