The United Nations said, on Sunday, that the escalation of armed confrontations in several regions of the governorates of Marib, Al-Jawf and Sanaa, since mid-January, has forced at least 4,700 families to flee.

"Humanitarian partners have provided emergency food, hygiene kits, shelter materials, life-saving water, and nutrition and protection services to people who need assistance in those areas," Lise Grande, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Yemen said in a statement.  She noted that Yemen is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, where about 80 percent of the population needs some form of humanitarian assistance and protection.

The UN official warned that ten million Yemenis are one step away from starvation and 7 million are suffering from malnutrition (starvation).

In the context of her statement, Grande indicated that initial field reports stated that 31 civilians were killed and others were injured as a result of raids on February 15 that struck the Al-Heija district of Al-Masloub District in Al-Jawf Governorate.

She said: "A lot of people are being killed in Yemen, it is a tragedy and an unjustification, according to international humanitarian law."

She stressed that those who resort to force are obligated to protect civilians.

The UN coordinator concluded, "But after five years of this conflict, the parties to the conflict are still failing to fulfill this responsibility ... This is shocking."
