The EU is expected to support Spain's claim to Gibraltar, giving Madrid the power to exclude the "Rock" from the post-Brexit deal.

The EU plans to give Spain the ability to "exclude" Britain's Gibraltar from any deal with the EU, following the divorce between London and Brussels, known as the "Brexit".

According to press reports, the European Union is expected to give British Prime Minister Boris Johnson the option of handing over the territory to Spain or excluding it from any trade agreement between the Union and Britain.

"They have requested in principle that the new relationship does not apply to Gibraltar without the express consent of Spain, and will only be granted if the question of Gibraltar is resolved through bilateral talks between Spain and Britain," a senior European diplomat told the British newspaper The Observer.

On Friday, Britain celebrated the start of the process of exiting the European Union, and the next phase of negotiations between the two sides is scheduled to begin on March 3rd.

The european Council's Article 50 outlines that the EU cannot reach an agreement with Britain on Gibraltar without the consent of the Spanish government, the Sun newspaper reported.
