Failure to take advantage of the current rare opportunity to achieve peace in Yemen could cost the international community $ 29 billion in additional humanitarian aid if the current civil war continues for another five years, the Guardian newspaper reported on Monday.

David Miliband, chairman of the International Rescue Committee and former British Foreign Secretary, said: "Today's gloomy forecast is an insight into the enormous cost of the era of impunity, where wars are fought with total disregard for civilian life and neglect by diplomats charged with ending the war, violence and accountability for the perpetrators of international law."

He warned that Houthi rebels were ignoring key elements of the ceasefire agreement at the Red Sea port of Hodeida as the World Food Program struggles to maintain control over food distribution from Houthi militias.

The Guardian said the United Kingdom, which is crucial in the peace process because it leads the issue in the UN Security Council, has allowed for the decline of diplomatic capacity put in the issue.

The newspaper called on the UK government to address its imbalances in its position on violations of international law in Yemen and to consistently issue official statements of condemnation when civilians are killed or civilian infrastructure destroyed by any party to the conflict.

"Any perceived absence of political participation from the UK summit would undermine the prospects for peace and the UK's reputation for influencing foreign policy and conflict resolution," it said.
