The Houthi militia, the Iranian arm in Yemen, is engaged in a covert war against the private sector in Sana'a and areas of its control under false headings (judicial detention, closure, tax evasion ...).

Since its takeover of Sana'a in 2014, the Houthi militia has practiced the largest extortion and looting of the private sector, affecting commercial companies, medical hospitals and even wholesalers, resulting in the bankruptcy of many companies, the closure of some, and the transfer of others outside their areas of influence.

Earlier this year, the Houthis closed al-Ameed restaurant in Taiz Street, one of the largest restaurants in the capital, after a dispute between partners with a Houthi leader from Saada.

Owners and staff in several restaurants in Sanaa told "Newsyemen" that illegal Houthi’s levies are the reason for the high prices of meals.

Last week, Houthis, through its Health Minister Taha al-Mutawakkil, issued a series of decisions and warnings of "last chance" for a number of private hospitals to rectify what they called their "legal status" before they get them closed, confiscated and subjected to management prosecution.

Experts warned that the arbitrary actions of the Houthi militia against the private sector, in areas under its control, especially Sanaa, will deepen the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, especially as there are tens of thousands of families will be without salaries or income, and many employees of private companies and hospitals will become unemployed.
