Aden, NewsYemen:

The World Bank has approved an additional $100 million grant for the second phase of the Emergency Electricity Provision Project in Yemen.

The World Bank said in a press release, that the additional financing aims to increase access to electricity in rural areas and the outskirts of cities in Yemen, and plans to restore the capacity of the electricity sector in the country.

He added that the new funding builds on the activities supported by the original $50 million project, which started in 2018.

According to the statement, the new funding will provide new or improved electricity services to 3.5 million people, about 48 percent of whom are 1.680 million women and girls.

It will also provide about 700 public service facilities and 100 schools with new or improved electricity services, which will help improve Yemenis' access to vital services.

The project is being implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services, in partnership with local stakeholders, and is funded by the International Development Association, the arm of the World Bank.

The electricity sector in Yemen has been severely damaged by the war, which has entered its eighth year, making it impossible for the population in most areas to obtain electricity due to the low generation capacities on the main grid.
