On Tuesday, 6 soldiers from the Military Police were killed and wounded in an armed ambush in Al-Mahrah Governorate, eastern Yemen.

"Sputnik" quoted a source in the local authority in Al-Mahrah as saying that gunmen ambushed a military convoy of the military police accompanying a coalition force in the Hat district east of the border port with Oman.

According to the source, the ambush resulted in the death of 5 Yemeni soldiers and the injury of another, and the damage of an armored vehicle.

This comes days after a military police force was stationed in the land border crossing linking Yemen and Oman, alongside a Saudi duty force affiliated with the Arab alliance that supervised the activity of the port.

The Legitimacy Support Alliance in Yemen had vowed, last Tuesday, not to tolerate any attempts to undermine security in the Yemeni province of Mahrah.

A statement of the coalition's joint forces command said: "We support the efforts of the Yemeni government to address organized crime and smuggling groups and attempts to undermine security and stability in Al-Mahrah Governorate."

"The attempts of organized crime and smuggling groups in Al-Mahra Governorate constitute a real security threat that undermines the efforts of the legitimate Yemeni government to impose security and stability in the province," said Col. Turki al-Maliki, spokesman for the coalition forces.

Maliki said that "some of the well-known figures in the governorate and the leaders of organized crime and smuggling groups tried on Monday to disrupt the efforts of government security agencies to stop and control smuggling operations in the governorate, and sought to facilitate these operations by using violence and lethal force by targeting security units and coalition forces to preserve their subversive interests.
