Aden, NewsYemen:

On Tuesday, the United States of America called on the Houthi militia - the Iranian arm in Yemen - to hand over mine-related maps, in conjunction with the International Day for Awareness of the Mine Threat, which falls on the fourth of April of each year.

The US embassy in Yemen said, in a brief statement on its Twitter account: "On the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, we mourn the Yemenis who were killed and injured by mines."

It added, "We call on the Houthis to hand over mine-related maps."

The Houthi militia is the only party involved in laying mines in Yemen, and according to official and human rights reports, it has planted more than two million mines of various shapes and sizes in vast areas of Yemen.

These mines have killed and injured thousands of civilians, most of them children and women, while large areas are still contaminated with minefields that pose a threat to citizens for years to come, according to human rights and government reports.
