Aden, NewsYemen:

The US Navy announced on Tuesday that it had intercepted a shipment of smuggled Iranian weapons in the Gulf of Oman, which was on its way to the Houthi militia, the Iranian arm in Yemen.

The US Fifth Fleet said, in a statement, that it intercepted a fishing vessel last Friday, with 2,116 assault rifles on board, as it was crossing international waters from Iran to Yemen.

He pointed out that sending or selling weapons to the Houthi militia, directly and indirectly, violates the Security Council resolution and international law.

Fifth Fleet Commander Brad Cooper said the arms shipment was part of Tehran's "continued pattern of destabilization".

"We will remain vigilant in disclosing any maritime activity that impedes freedom of navigation or endangers regional security," Cooper added.
