Yemen's wheat imports rise in July

Wheat imports to the ports of Aden and Mukalla increased in July, as they witnessed a significant increase on a monthly basis, and 77,000 metric tons were unloaded, compared to 22,000 metric tons in June.

Yemen's total wheat imports between January and July 2022 amounted to two million metric tons, a 16% decrease from 2.4 million metric tons during the same period in 2021.

The report, "Global Wheat Supply Dynamics and Impact", said that wheat imports through the Red Sea ports accounted for 73% of Yemen's total wheat imports between January 2021 and July 2022.

The report issued by the Capacity Assessment Organization, which monitors local market dynamics in Yemen, indicated that there is sufficient wheat supply in the country, which is readily available for purchase.

International wheat prices began to decline at the end of June 2022 and fell further after the signing of the grain export agreement between Russia and Ukraine on July 22.

Wheat imports rose slightly to Yemen, with international wheat prices starting to decline at the end of June, and the organization expected that Yemeni importers in the coming months would implement safe deals amid increasing global competition.

Yemen imports 90% of basic foodstuffs, of which bulk wheat constitutes an average of 57% of its monthly food imports.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), wheat from Russia and Ukraine accounted for 45% of the total wheat imported to Yemen in 2021.

Wheat imports from Russia to Yemen continued, in smaller quantities than before the war, and decreased to 5% of total wheat imports between March-June.

According to the report, the increase in wheat imports from India and Australia covered the share of Ukrainians and Russian wheat imports to Yemen.

Between March and June 2022, Yemen imported total wheat from India 31%, from Australia 29%, 12% from the United States and 4% from France.  2% of the total wheat is from Romania, and 5% from Russia.

Yemen imports wheat, barley and corn, and the delivery time from the port of loading to the port of entry in Yemen ranges between six weeks and three months, depending on the country of export.

 According to CAP discussions with key informants and based on data on the volume of wheat imports to Yemen since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian Lord in February, there is currently no concern about the availability of wheat in Yemen
