The cost of road transport in Yemen increased by 145%
English - Saturday 19 March 2022 الساعة 04:02 pmA new economic study said that the costs of road transport in Yemen increased by up to 145% as a result of the increase in fuel prices and the adoption of longer-distance alternative routes.
The study, "The Road and Land Transport Sector in Yemen - Critical Issues and Priority Policies" added that the conflict, in its various forms, has caused an increase in the suffering of travel and movement of citizens and the difficulty of transporting goods between governorates, to and from Yemen.
The study issued by the project “Reimagining the Economy of Yemen” estimated the losses of road projects as a result of the conflict at about 1.3 billion dollars; The total length of the damaged roads was about 6,000 km and more than 100 crossing bridges were damaged.
The study indicated that road projects were halted due to the scarcity of financial conditions, which exacerbated the sector's problems.
Road transport is one of the most important and most widely used means of transport, as more than 70% of the population of Yemen lives in 140,000 communities spread across the countryside, most of which need roads and include the poorest of the population.
According to the study prepared by researcher Nabil Al-Tiri, the most prominent challenges are the deterioration of the institutional structure of the road and road transport sector; Inadequate policies and legislation, equipment, machinery and assets deterioration, and leakage of cadres and human resources.
The study considered the crisis of financial resources the biggest obstacle faced by the regulators of the road and road transport sector, which affects the operational aspects within the sector.
