Washington pledges to strengthen the arms embargo on the Houthi militia in Yemen
English - Saturday 05 March 2022 الساعة 06:30 pmThe US President's nominee for ambassador to Yemen, Stephen Feigen, pledged to work to strengthen the arms embargo in Yemen to stop the flow of arms to the Houthi militia, in accordance with a UN Security Council resolution.
Feigen said during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing for his confirmation that strengthening enforcement of the UN arms embargo on Yemen to cut off the flow of weapons to the Houthis should be a priority.
Feigen expressed concern about the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and the UAE through missiles and armed drones. He stressed that Washington will continue its policy of imposing sanctions on individuals and groups that seek to support the continuation of the conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Yemen for its own interests.
He believed that "peace in Yemen is still possible," expressing his aspiration to work with the US special envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking, to support international efforts to secure a sustainable and comprehensive solution to the conflict, if approved in the post.
Feigen pointed out that the re-listing of the Houthis on the terrorist list is currently under review. The review considers the impact of the inclusion on the actions of the Houthis and on the humanitarian situation in Yemen.
