Aden, NewsYemen:

The Yemeni government commended the Security Council for exerting more pressure on the Houthi militias by issuing a resolution describing the Houthi militias as a terrorist group for the first time.

According to what was published by the official news agency "Saba", the Republic of Yemen welcomed the issuance of UN Security Council Resolution No. 2624, related to the extension of the sanctions regime in Yemen and the mandate of the Panel of Experts of the Sanctions Committee established in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 2140 of 2014.

The resolution designated the Houthi militia for the first time as a terrorist group and was included in the Security Council sanctions list in response to the widespread violations committed by these militias, including their terrorist attacks against civilians and civilian facilities in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, their use of sexual violence against women, and their recruitment  of children and their involvement in the battlefronts, their planting of landmines and obstruction of humanitarian access, in addition to their deliberate and repeated attacks against civilian and commercial ships in the Red Sea.

The Yemeni government commended the Security Council exerting more pressure on the Houthi militia by issuing this resolution, which represents a translation of the council’s previous positions in condemning the Houthi terrorist attacks, as this resolution limits the military capabilities of this terrorist group and works to stop Iranian support for it, including:  It is the smuggling of weapons that prolongs the war and exacerbates the humanitarian crisis.

The Yemeni government indicated that the decision will work to reduce Houthi violations and their threat to the security and safety of international shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, stressing that the issuance of this decision represents a positive step in order to pressure the Houthi militias to abandon the option of war and return to the path of peace.

The Yemeni government reiterated that the only way to reach a just and sustainable peace in Yemen is through the peace process led by the United Nations, which is based on the terms of reference for the agreed upon political solution, represented by the Gulf Initiative and its executive mechanism, the outcomes of the comprehensive National Dialogue Conference and the relevant Security Council resolutions, on top of which is the  Resolution 2216
