On Friday, Amnesty International called on the Houthi militia to release a Briton who has been held captive for nearly five years.
The organization said, in a statement, that Luke Simmons, a 29-year-old British man married to a Yemeni woman, was arrested in April 2017 by the Houthis on suspicion of espionage.
It added that Simmons is currently in solitary confinement in a prison in the capital, Sana'a, and his physical and psychological health has deteriorated sharply.
The organization called on London to do "more" to release Luke Simmons, who broke his arm during interrogation to extract a confession from him, according to his family.
"We know this is a difficult time for Luke Simmons and his family," a State Department spokesperson said, according to Agence France-Presse.
He addrd: "Our teams are working intensively to secure Luke's release. We remain in close contact with his family, which we have supported since 2017."
