The US special envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking, confirmed that the Houthi militia continues to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and obstruct peace in the country, stressing that the Houthis "have not shown a real commitment to the peace process."
In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Linderking said, "The United States has designated many Houthi leaders and their financial networks on sanctions lists, and this has a real impact on Houthi operations, and we will continue to follow up on the classification of individuals and entities that promote instability and commit atrocities against civilians."
He added, "Houthi attacks on Marib kill civilians, including children, and put more than a million internally displaced Yemenis in grave danger. The recent Houthi measures in the Abdiya district are the latest example of the Houthis' blatant disregard for the protection of civilians."
He continued, "Through my associations with the Yemeni people, I continue to hear Yemenis constantly calling for peace, and the Houthis cannot ignore the voices of the people calling for a cessation of this violence. This is a critical moment for the Houthis to prove that they truly want peace, security, stability, and a prosperous future for Yemenis."
About the question if it was wrong to remove the Houthis from the list of foreign terrorist organizations?... Lenderking said, "The United States' cancellation of the designation of the Houthi group from the terrorist list is a measure in order to avoid unintended negative humanitarian consequences, as 90% of basic commodities are imported in Yemen by private companies.
And he added, "Out of great caution, these companies may be engaging in compliance with the sanctions, which could have a significant impact on imports into Yemen, and Yemenis would suffer more without those imports."
He added, "We continue to consider the classification of individuals and entities of the Houthis and others who, where appropriate, finance instability in Yemen, including those who commit atrocities against civilians."
Regarding Iran's negative impact on the Houthis, he said: "We have not seen Iran play any positive role in Yemen, and we have said that for a long time. If Iran wants to show that it can be an active and responsible actor, it should start by ending its interference in the conflict in Yemen."
Over the course of 9 months, the US Special Envoy to Yemen, Tim Lenderking, has engaged in meetings and visits to the Arab region more than 13 times, in order to "achieve peace" and end the conflict in the country, and to activate the political dialogue between the Yemeni parties. The shooting stopped and did not end the seven-year conflict in the country.
