Marib security rejects judicial orders to release a worker arbitrarily detained for a year

Hundreds of residents of the Mashra`a Wahdanan-Sabr district demonstrated in front of the local authority building in Taiz, on Tuesday, to demand the release of a prisoner who has been in the Political Security Prison in Marib for a year, without referring him to trial.

Participants in the demonstration said that the security forces in Marib arrested Muhammad Ali Qaid al-Abbasi, on August 15, 2020, during a raid on his workplace in Al-Shaibani restaurants in the city center.

They added that Marib security arrested a number of restaurant workers, and released them after a short period, while keeping the Abbasid young man, who worked as an accountant in the restaurant, before he was transferred to the Political Security prison.

The protesters denounced the illegal violations of the Abbasid detainee in prison, denouncing the prevention of his father and mother from visiting him and checking on him.

They raised pictures of "Al-Abbasi", and banners containing the orders of the former Public Prosecutor, and a number of the competent judicial authorities, regarding the issue of his arrest, and demanding his release.

Al-Share' newspaper quoted Mustafa, the brother of the detainee, Muhammad Ali al-Abbasi, as saying that Ma'rib security had not allowed them to visit him for nearly a year, and they do not know the reason for his arrest until now.

Al-Abbasi stated that the security and military authorities in Marib rejected the orders of the former Public Prosecutor and the Head of the Specialized Criminal Appeals Prosecution in Marib, to refer the detainee to the Public Prosecution if he had a case, or to release him.

A statement issued by the vigil said that the Political Security in Marib refused to implement a directive issued by Public Prosecutor Ali Al-Awash on 27/12/2020 AD to the Criminal Prosecution to review and find out the justification for the detention of the detainee Muhammad al-Absi, and to direct him to the prosecution if he has a criminal case or to release him, in addition  To the memorandum of the Head of the Specialized Criminal Appeals Prosecution Office in Marib No. (435) dated 21/31/2020 AD to the Political Security Branch in Marib, informing them of his priorities or releasing him.  And because he was not attributed any criminal or other incident.

The statement indicated that among the directives issued was also a commentary note from the Chief of the Criminal Prosecution to the Director of Political Security in Marib on 1/15/2021, requesting him to quickly send his priorities to the Public Prosecution, according to jurisdiction, if there is a criminal incident, or to release him immediately in accordance with the law.

There is also another memorandum from the First Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Major General/ Muhammad Salem bin Aboud Al Sharif, to the Political Security Agency’s Undersecretary for Interior Affairs, instructing the Political Security Agency branch in Marib to release the detainee, as long as the case is resolved and the original restaurant owner has been released, but the Political Security Agency  None of these orders was implemented, although no case was proven against the detainee who works as an accountant to support his family, according to the statement.

The statement appealed to "the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Governor of Ma'rib Governorate and the Governor of Taiz, to quickly release the detainee, Muhammad Ali Qaid al-Abbasi, who has been in the Political Security prison in Marib for a year, without legal justification."

The statement called, "local and international human rights organizations, and various media outlets to support the cause of the unjustly detained Muhammad Ali al-Abbasi, which targets humanity and personal rights, and turn it into a public opinion issue."
