Aden, NewsYemen:

The United Nations special envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, is visiting the Saudi capital, Riyadh, to consult with Yemeni and Saudi officials, seeking to reach a ceasefire agreement and resume the political process between the parties to the conflict.

The spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, said in his daily press conference that “the special envoy is expected to meet in the next few days with senior Yemeni officials, as well as Saudi officials and diplomats.”

Dujarric explained, "The visit comes within the framework of the efforts made by Griffiths to seek to devise a plan to ease restrictions imposed on the movement of people and basic goods to and from Yemen, and to achieve a nationwide ceasefire and to oblige the parties to the conflict to resume the political process."

The international envoy reached a dead end after his failure to convince the Houthis to agree to his plan for a ceasefire in Yemen, which accelerated the writing of the last chapter of his international mission in the country, and returned the train of negotiations to Station Zero.

Earlier Monday, the US envoy to Yemen, Timothy Lenderking, said that he would travel this week to Saudi Arabia, Oman, and possibly other countries, and he had contacted the leaders of all the Arab Gulf states and some European countries as well.

He stressed that there is now a strong international consensus on resolving the conflict in Yemen, and that this solution is achievable, referring to the auxiliary roles played by several parties in the world.

The US envoy indicated that they have done a good job of mobilizing the necessary international support, but he stressed that unless a ceasefire agreement is reached, all the work we are doing now will not be successful.
