Aden, NewsYemen:

The humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen has reached its peak, with the number of Yemenis at risk of falling into starvation, this year, to 16 million, according to United Nations estimates.

On Monday, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, revealed shocking figures for the number of people expected to be plagued by famine in Yemen this year.

The UN official expects that about 16 million Yemenis will go hungry this year alone, that is, more than half of the population, according to the latest population census, indicating in a press conference that 20 million Yemenis are in tragedy in need of humanitarian aid.

These warnings come about six years after the outbreak of the war, which made 80% of the population dependent on humanitarian aid, while its merchants on both sides gained wealth, at the expense of the pain of the majority of Yemenis.

Dujarric said that tens of thousands are living in a situation similar to famine, and that 5 million Yemenis are at one distance from it.

These statistics reveal the scale of the disaster that pushed the Houthi militia, the country to its home, after it worked over the past years in bulldozing the national economy, destroying state institutions, removing thousands of their jobs, and depriving employees of their monthly salaries for more than 5 years, which led to a threat. Millions starve to death.

In contrast to the tragedy that afflicts more than half of Yemen's population, most of the leaders and members of the Houthi militia are living in a state of great wealth following the seizure of state resources for their personal benefit, in addition to the practices of plundering international humanitarian aid, and the exorbitant financial royalties it imposes on citizens, merchants and farmers in their areas of control.

The biggest humanitarian dilemma facing millions of Yemeni families in the northern governorates is the suspension of the salaries of the employees who number more than 800 thousand employees, according to official statistics, and behind each employee is a family consisting of several members, as well as the suspension of business, as a result of the militia imposing taxes, customs and the war effort on Merchants.

Earlier, four United Nations agencies said that at least 400,000 Yemeni children under the age of five may die of starvation this year if there is no urgent intervention amid high rates of acute malnutrition among Yemen's children resulting from the war and the Coronavirus pandemic.

While it is expected that 2.3 million children in Yemen under the age of five will suffer from acute malnutrition in 2021. The statement stated that malnutrition increased among children and mothers every year of the conflict due to the high rates of disease and food insecurity.

In addition, 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding women will be severely malnourished this year.
