The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Congress called for ensuring the procedures related to the humanitarian support that their country provides to Yemen, a day before the State Department’s decision to consider the Houthis as an “external terrorist organization” took effect tomorrow, January 19.
In a letter sent by the chairperson of the committee with 25 members of Congress to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, they demanded that the minister ensure the flow of humanitarian aid and that all procedures related to it be completed from the first day of the decision taking effect.
The message said, “Even if the Biden administration canceled the decision taken by the Trump administration, it would be late, no matter how fast the veto. Therefore, the administration of the current president called Trump to ensure the continued flow of aid to the needy Yemenis.
In the message, the members sided with the concerns of the United Nations, and said that the classification of the Houthis will not help the solution in Yemen, and will exclude them from the political dialogue and increase their isolation, "with a terrible impact on the United States' partners in Yemen," stressing that "there will be no lasting solution in Yemen." Unless it includes the Houthis.
With their assurances of the dangers of the "destabilizing" role of the Houthi, "the use of Iranian weapons" and "obstructing humanitarian aid."
But they said that the decision could lead to the death of thousands of Yemenis from starvation, and prevent the Red Sea from being saved from the Safir Reservoir.
