On Monday, 16 civilians were killed and injured when a landmine planted by the Houthi militia, the Iranian arm of Yemen, exploded in a vehicle carrying passengers in the northern province of Al-Jouf.

According to the Office of Human Rights in Al-Jouf, a landmine planted by the Houthi militia exploded in a civilian car carrying 16 people as it passed on the highway in The Qaisien area east of The Khab and Shaaf district.

The explosion killed three civilians and injured 13 others, as well as the destruction of the car they were travelling in.

Landmines planted by Houthi militias in various provinces and areas they have controlled since they took power in 2014 have claimed thousands of civilian casualties, mostly women and children.

International estimates indicate that the number of landmines in Yemen is the highest concentration in a single country since the Second World War.
