Yemen ranked the last world's list of countries in the World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders.

Yemen in 2019 ranked 168 out of the world's 180 countries, as well as the 18th among the Arab countries.

The classification disclosed a disastrous toll for journalists and freedom of the press in Yemen since the Houthi militias took control of the Capital Sana'a in September 2014,  as well as the war since March 26, 2015, and political and security turmoil in Yemen.

The Houthi militias arrested at least 16 journalists and collaborators - including one journalist who died of torture in their prisons in 2018 shortly after his release. Al-Qaeda has kidnapped one, most of them since 2015.

It confirmed that in the areas run by the Legitimate government, journalists are detained arbitrarily, and are victims of attacks by armed groups.
